the Journey So Far…

I started my career in 1980 as an apprentice Screen Printer. Once I’d finished my apprenticeship, I worked across a range of textile printing jobs around Melbourne. By 1987, I’d teamed up with three partners to run a successful commission textile printing company — where I also had my first encounter with the world of computer graphics…
Back then, artwork was created the old-school way — pens, stencil knives, and repro cameras. Computers were just starting to sneak into the industry, and I was given the job of figuring out how they could save us time and money on artwork…

So, I bought my very own PC — a mighty 386 with 2MB of RAM — and dove headfirst into this “computer graphics” thing. I cut my teeth on programs like Autodesk Animator, Photostyler, CorelDraw, and 3D Studio.
Not long after, I sold my share of the business and took on a trainee role as a Digital Graphic Designer. That’s where I picked up skills in digital pre-press and artwork creation, which eventually led me into tech support and design roles for computer accessory companies.
By 1998, the internet was taking off, and I jumped straight onto the Web Design train. A workmate introduced me to HTML using Notepad, once I got my head around it I was hooked. Soon I was building sites with Macromedia Dreamweaver, pushing the limits of HTML5, and Javascript. Around the same time, I was also tasked with producing educational multimedia CDs using Macromedia Director — bundled with the modems we were selling. Soon after, Flash arrived on the scene. I was in my element! I became proficient at Actionscript 1 and 2 coding, building rich interactive websites and multimedia applications.

I freelanced for eight years, combining everything I’d learned in graphic and web design. My specialty became Flash programming — designing interactive portfolios, product sites, and on the Graphic Design side, plenty of work for the signage industry. Eventually, one of my biggest signage clients brought me on full-time, and I’ve now been working with the medium-sized signage company for over a decade.
These days, I’m still exploring new tech — dabbling in automation with n8n and experimenting with AI. My first public project is mek⍟Weather, a fun weather subscription built on n8n. And that’s just the beginning… there are plenty more projects to come.
